Lesson Plan: Magnetic Flux

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine the magnetic flux through a loop in a magnetic field and recognize changes in the magnetic flux through a loop.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that a uniform magnetic field can be modeled as a set of parallel straight field lines and that the density of magnetic field lines represents the magnitude of a magnetic field,
  • define the magnetic flux, 𝜑, through an area, 𝐴, that intersects the magnetic field lines of a magnetic field, 𝐵, using the equation 𝜑=𝐵𝐴𝜃cos, where 𝜃 is the angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the direction perpendicular to all sides of 𝐴,
  • relate the magnetic flux, 𝜑, through a loop of area 𝐴 and the magnetic flux linkage, Φ, through a coil that consists of 𝑁 loops each of area 𝐴, using the equation Φ=𝑁𝜑.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • magnetic field lines,
  • circular and rectangular loops and solenoids and toroids as shapes that straight lines can be formed into.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • electromagnetic induction.
